About John

John Florez and familyMy name is John Florez and I'd like to be your next Senator for District 13. We have an opportunity to seize: more so than ever, this community has the potential to be pioneers in the new economy. I pledge to work to help create new legacy industries made up of green infrastructure, biotech, information technology, and other "future industries" that will result in well-paying and sustainable year-round jobs.

I am the CEO of Drupal Connect, an award-winning web development and staffing company that's been recognized by Inc. Magazine, Northrop Grumman, and Google. We have over 50 employees, and 13 of them work out of our headquarters in downtown Newport. On a typical day, it's not unusual to see one or two dogs running around the office or games being played while creating phenomenal work. Some have referred to our work environment as "avant-garde;" I like to refer to it simply as awesome! My professional background has given me a unique perspective into the need for greater innovation in our region, and that's how I run my company.

My wife and I have been married for over 11 years and have two children, Nefi, 9, and Martha, 12. Nefi loves to tell stories and is kind, gentle, and compassionate. Martha is nearing her teenage years and nothing that Karen and I do is cool enough for her. She has a great sense of humor, loves singing and acting, and much to my relief, she's a green belt in karate.

In 2014, I was elected as an "at-large" member of the Newport City Council. In my brief time in that position, I've spearheaded resolutions that will eliminate single-use plastic bags, implement a police body camera program, create a surveillance camera program in some of the business districts, and hire a director of technology for the city. In addition, by the end of the year, Newport will have the most state-of-the-art, sophisticated yet easy-to-use website in the entire state, all due to my efforts. I've also passed resolutions that have had a direct impact on crafting the policy of the Innovation Hub project, an endeavor that will help drive "future industry" jobs to our city. A good leader has a track record of taking action when needed, and not only has a vision of where the community needs to be, but the ability to make that vision a reality. I unequivocally believe I am that type of leader. I am asking for your support to be your next Senator for District 13.
