Jamestown and Newport boast some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. As a part of the "Ocean State," this community has a special obligation to provide environmental stewardship. Clean waters are beneficial for marine wildlife, our citizens' health, and even our local economy. As a member of the Newport City Council, I drafted the resolution that made us the second city in Rhode Island to ban single-use plastic bags. In April, I will be announcing a resolution that will prohibit balloons from being released into the atmosphere, as well as a plan to install water filler stations throughout the city, a measure that will give people the opportunity to rely on reusable water bottles instead of plastic ones. I believe if we all work together, Jamestown, Newport, and our state can set an example for environmental excellence.
